Reflections:

Experience:

This has certainly been a very interesting experience for me. Out of all the assignments, I enjoyed the calligraphy project the most as that was more towards hand done work which is more of my forte than digital. The verb animation and name lettering was also interesting as we were allowed to be creative and come up with our own ideas and concepts. Mr Babadook was quite challenging and I found it difficult to stick to the simple, basic style that was required and expected. It was quite a struggle for me as we were only allowed black and white and I rely on colours quite often, but I suppose it would be a useful skill to know how to make a design look attractive without colour. The font design was really challenging for me as I was required to follow the rules of font convention and be very precise and neat with my font, which I was not good at doing. Hence I had to redo it at the last minute which was a very stressful experience.

Observations:

I observed that overall, I was better at the assignments that required more hand work and creative expression than those that required me to follow certain rules and conventions of design. I had much trouble sticking to basic, simple designs and I normally had to simplify my design after recieving feedback from the lecturers. This class required and enabled me to learn a lot from my classmates, by observing their work, work processes and talking with them. In fact, I feel I learnt a great deal from my classmates. I was also required to learn independently and how to figure out problems and solutions on my own.

Findings:

Throughout this module, I realised that type is an overlooked element that is essential in all design works. I realised that sometimes I will be required to produce work in a way that is not of my liking or style to suit the brief/client needs. I have also learnt to be more independent in my learning as well as to seek out multiple opinions from my peers and analyse them to figure out how to improve my work. I have also found that to achieve a certain standard of work, multiple drafts and attempts will be needed. I have also found that time management is likely my biggest weakness which I need to work on.
