Publishing II: Exercises 26th Mar. 2018 (Week

Beatrix Leong Yi Wen (0331043)
Publishing 2: Mass Communication

Lectures //

Week 1:

We learnt about the history of print. The earliest printed book came from China. Paper was also invented in China. We also learnt about the first books with illustrations.

Week 2:

For books, it is very important to be aware of the format- size, binding and material. The criteria for the format of a book is based on criteria such as the audience. For example, the size used for childrens books would be very different than the size used for adult books due to the different sized hands.

Forum Questions
Q: What are the advantages of the current book format (as used today) over the scroll and palm leave formats from the perspective of the binding?

A: The current book format is much easier to mass produce, and is more sturdy and long lasting. It is also faster to produce and easier to customise to the specific needs.

Week 3:
Typography is one of the most important skills and components in graphic design. We learnt about the different characters in type faces. We also reviewed the basis of readability and legibility. Some examples of good serif typefaces are Bembo, Bodoni, Garamond etc and some sans serif ones are Helveica and Gill Sans.

Forum Question:
What are the advantages or disadvantages of using a single type family (i.e. Futura Std) vs a combination of type ((i.e Futura Std and Garamond) in the context of book design?

A: Using a single type family will ensure that the type in the book looks consistant throughout and that the book looks cohesive and pleasing to the eye. In addition, it will be easier to read. If the type family has a wide range of varieties, it can be plausible to use only one font family.

However, especially if there are not many variables/variety of font styles in the font family, there is a risk of the text looking boring and unattractive. Using different font families can work very well for design but they need to be chosen carefully in order to ensure they work well together.

Week 5:
We learnt about the different ways of formatting text.

Feedback

Week 4:
Visuals are too predictable and need to have more detail and variety.

Week 5:
Layout needs to be more consistent. Point size for the text is too large. Change the font of the titles, and it shouldn't be the same font as the pull quote.

Week 6:
Visuals need to be put into the layout to see the whole thing clearly;

Week 7:
Visuals are too weak and need to be changed. Try photography instead.

Week 8:
Book is ok. Focus on ebook and iphone book now.

Week 9:
Must complete ebook and iphone book.

Reflection

Experience
It was an interesting experience to be able to experiment with the classical fold and create a mini booklet by hand.

Observations
I observed that the typesetting was a crucial part that helped us to determine our final look for the eventual book.

Findings
I found that the exercises were useful in preparing us to be able to produce our final book.
