Front & Back and Back & Forth

An undertaking of a series of Illustrations to illuminate narrative spaces and transitions that allow to demonstrate technical and conceptual abilities.

Narratives can be conveyed in many ways. Some narratives follow a traditional linear arc. Other narratives loop in time, flash forward and back, restructure sequence or employ aspect-to-aspect transitions. Some view the same incident from different perspectives. Multiple narratives can be spliced together. Events can be placed in random order. Panels can be subverted. And several narrative threads can be simultaneously told. Narratives can be poetic. They can explore internal emotions instead of external action. They can investigate a central theme. Narratives can be shaped around predetermined rules. They can be reversed, labyrinthine in nature, and involve multiple readings with ambiguous beginnings and endings.

Outcome
Based on the given narrative you are to create a series of illustration to demonstrate the passage of time that leads to the one piece or concludes it. Referring to your submitted rational, you will formulate a narrative for this passage of time and produce one out of the two following outcomes:

All outcomes must utilize at least 3 layers and identify 3 transitional types (Scott McCloud). The outcome may include more than one perspective point, meaning it can be viewed from back to front, right to left vice versa.

Weightage
Portfolio totals 40% of the final grades. There will be checkpoints and marks shall be awarded at the checkpoint. The total weight of this assignment is 40% of the final marks.

Work Processes ||

As we were given the option to choose our own story subject to approval, I proposed to do a Greek myth about Artemis & Orion. Artemis is a Greek goddess of the Moon and the Hunt. Orion is a mortal who is an exceptional hunter. The original myth is as follows:





Mr Hafiz approved the story but told me I should take the opportunity to change the story a little. After reading the myth and thinking about it, some elements of the myth struck me as mildly horrifying such as Orion practically stalking and assaulting one of Artemis' nymphs but she's totally fine with it and goes all "wow omg so hot such a good hunter be my bf pls" which I feel sends a very negative message to readers, especially young girls, that actions resembling assault and stalking is normal and even to be admired.

Thus, I changed the ending as shown below:


With my altered story line, I began to proceed to map out my three act structure and five act structure.

Next, I proceeded to create some character sketches.
Artemis character sketch and characteristics

Merope character sketches V2: I decided to make the nymphs/Merope look simpler, more mystical and wafty.

Orion character sketches and characteristics
After I finalised the concept art and plot for my three and five act structures as well as my character sketches, I went on to create the sketches of the scenes I will be showing in my parallex. (These are all on seperate papers but are meant to be visualised as one long strip)

Scene 1: Introduction/exposition- Artemis practices her archery
Scene 2: Confrontation: Orion is chasing after Merope and the other nymphs; they call to Artemis for help. Artemis gives Orion an ultimatum: never set foot in her forest again and never set eyes on her nymphs again, or she will make him pay a fate worse than death. 



Scene 3: Rising action- Despite Artemis' warning, Orion returns in the hunt for Merope again. Artemis spots him.

Scene 4: Climax- Artemis, truly angered, shoots at Orion without any hesitation.
Scene 5: Falling action- Orion flies through the sky



Scene 6: Denoument/resolution- Orion is cursed to be trapped in the sky as stars and only appear at night when the nymphs are safely sleeping indoors.

My research and inspiration moodboard:

I decided on approaching this very digitally based assignment with a hand-done touch as it suited my style better. I created my illustrations for the background and characters with pens and watercolour which I scanned and enhanced the colour digitally before masking them out to be able to import them to Animate CC as Photoshop files.

The constellation in the last scene was created digitally in Illustrator however, as I thought it would look cleaner if drawn digitally.

Next, I proceeded to start creating my parallax in Animate CC. (Unfortunately, my trial version of the software has expired thus I cannot open it to take screenshots)

Feedback:
During the presentation, Mr Hafiz gave me some feedback such as for the composition of the first scene, Artemis should be facing the other way as to lead the audience's eyes to the next scene. My masking needed more work to be cleaner. He also commented I had too much movement and I should lessen it and not focus and worry on the animation aspect of the parallax so much. There were also too many close ups/medium close ups and I should add more focal points further into the distance, and zoom out a little.

Additionally, I had some technical problem with adding the interactive buttons and additionally, when rendered into an animation the quality of my artworks were downgraded and had strange dots appearing. Hence, Mr Hafiz advised those who had technical issues with Animate CC to try creating our parallax in Madefire instead. I proceeded to do so, and address the feedback given, and things went much smoother.
