Publishing Print Media: Project 2, Brochure Design

November 07, 2017

Lectures //

Week 7:
In this class, we submitted our Project 1. Ms Lilian gave us a short lecture on some useful tips and tricks in InDesign that we would need for our next assignment. We were also briefed on Project 2: we would need to create a brochure based on the given text about P. Ramlee, and include visuals as well. We started our research on P Ramlee and brochure folding, layout and design.

Week 8:
Today we showed our first drafts of our leaflet, along with our research, text formatting and thumbnail sketches. We had a feedback session with our classmates and Ms Lilian, and with this began our refinements.

Week 9:
We discussed ways we could publish our brochures online. After this, we had individual feedback sessions with Ms Lilian, showing her our second drafts. After receiving her feedback we set to polish our work one final time.

Project 2 (30%)

The Brief
Brochure Design

Duration of Assignment
3 Weeks (Briefing on week 6)

Deadline
Week 9 (01 Nov 2017)

Description
You will conceptualise, design and produce a brochure on a topic assigned to you. The text will be
provided for you but you will have to display creativity in the execution of visual dynamics with text
and page layout. Conceptualize an appropriate setting for the design of the brochure and take
information from there to create more design details. For example, to accompany an artshow,
background information on a play, etc.

You will tell the story connected to the topic as a brochure of no more than 8 pages. The brochure
must contain a cover, the article, visuals, information as well as a back cover. The execution of this
brochure is an introduction and exercise to formatting and arranging a large body of text to provide
a clear and informative physical representation of the topic given.

As you progress, lectures, tutorials and discussions will support your understanding of this design
area. It is important that you develop an in-depth understanding of publishing design through
analyzing the linear manner a brochure communicates information and ideas to its reader. You will
use Adobe InDesign in your execution of the brochure layout. Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator and
Adobe Photoshop is a must.

Finally, you shall explore how to digitally publish your brochure online. As this is an
experimentation in progress, it shall be a learning process done during contact hours with your
lecturer. The aim would be to successfully publish the brochure online.

Requirements
The size of the brochure will be no larger than A4 (when folded) for considerations of economy.
You may use any colour of your choice, full-colour if necessary, for the communication of the
topic. You may be resourceful to acquire visuals from different sources but ensure that you credit
these sources accordingly. The work is compiled chronologically in an A3 Folio and documented
on the students’ e portfolio.

Submission
1. 8 page brochure in colour/black and white of a good standard of crafting.
2. Research and design process filed chronologically, in an A3 folio.
3. Design report on e portfolio.
4. Digital publication of brochure.

Objectives
1. To develop students ability to produce layout of a good standard.
2. To develop students ability to create a suitable grid system that allows them flexibility.
3. To develop students understanding of the relationship between text and image.
4. To develop students ability to manage a large body of information while prioritizing
aesthetics and function.
5. To develop students discovery of the digital publishing platform.

Research //

I did some research on various leaflets online and real life to get a better idea of the available types of folds, layouts and styles of brochures available. Please find them below in my pinterest link (online research) and photos (real life).

Second draft layout sans serif body text (inside)

Second draft layout sans serif body text (outside)
Based on the feedback for the above drafts I received I made some changes to the body text layout (I went with the second draft as the font was more suitable) to make it look more interesting and dynamic as well as add extra visuals in it. I changed the front cover as well and added quotes.

Based on the feedback I received on the above drafts, I had to make a few more changes based on my fourth draft such as alter the front page layout to be easier to read, change the text formatting, fix the orphans and widows, etc. These changes are reflected in my final work published online below.

Feedback //

Week 7:
None

Week 8:
The sans serif white body text version is better. I need to add more visuals in and edit the existing visual so that it would match the cover page visual. Good use of colour. Dynamic and interesting front and back page, I have to make sure my inside pages are also as good. I need to make the body text more interesting and dynamic by playing around with the layouts.

Week 9:
Front page is better but a bit hard to read. I should arrange it in a way where it's less confusing. I should change the body text to Avenir and the title text to Univers Condensed as well as remove the text highlight. Need to adjust spacing and remove orphans and widows.

Reflections //

Experience:

My experience for this brochure project has generally been quite enjoyable, I liked being able to design my own brochure and come up with different layouts. I feel that however the requirement of us having to do an 8 fold brochure is a bit limiting. I feel this project was much faster and we did it more efficiently than the previous project, even though this is harder and more complicated.

Observations:

Although I noticed that I can get a lot of work done in the six hour period, I noticed my productivity plummets quite drastically once we get to the fourth hour and close to zero during the fifth hour, probably because I'm tired and starving already and can't work and think as effectively. I observed that my workpace is very slow compared to my classmates which slows my process down and leaves me behind sometimes.

Findings:

I found that I was able to finish my work actually a couple of days earlier than the due date for a change at the cost of sacrificing my precious sleep in order to get things done. This was a relief to not procrastinate this assignment so that I won't be assembling everything together last minute in class for a change.
