The BriefThe Book. (Part 1: Content Generating)
Duration of Assignment
4 Weeks (Briefing on Week 1)
DEADLINE
Week 5
Description
In this project you will be asked to create and design a book of 32 pages that is smaller than A4
but bigger than A5. Your task will be to:
1. Write 3000 words (English/Malay) on any subject that you are familiar with, for example:
yourself, your family, someone who inspires you, your hometown, or an experience or an
idea/belief that you feel strongly about, etc. The text content must be divided into 3
chapters minimum, it must also have 3/4/5 subtexts (sidebars) and one caption per
chapter. You have 1 week for this.
2. Identify 16 areas in your written text for visualization, you may use any medium that is
suitable for your topic/direction, for example: illustration, photography or mix-media. You
have 3 weeks for this (after completing your 3000 words).
As you proceed through the stages of the project you will be given exercises that will help prepare
you for the following or the current stages of the project. Project 01 must be finished within 4
weeks.
Requirements
The student must document the above progression in their eportfolio and A4 hardcopy portfolio.
The results of the two phases must be collated and presented in the sample format shown in
class. The 3000 words is to be formatted and submitted on A4 paper, at 9pt Helvetica, 11pt
leading, consisting of all textual information of the book from front cover to back cover. A
thumbnail printout of all 16 visuals as shown in the sample produced in class.
Submission
1. All gathered information (failures, successes, epiphanies, sketches, visual research,
printouts, websites, images, charts, etc.) documented logically and chronologically in the
A4 Clear Sheet folder. The works must be labelled and dated.
2. All gathered information (failures, successes, epiphanies, sketches, visual research,
printouts, websites, images, charts, etc.) documented logically and chronologically in the
eportfolio for the duration of the project in one post.
3. Typed content of 3000 words, formatted on A4 paper. (Left Aligned, 9pt Helvetica, 11pt
leading, consisting of all textual information from front to back cover).
4. All 16 visuals placed in InDesign, using the predetermined page size and printed out in
colour in a thumbnail printout.
Objectives
1. To develop students ability to generate own content.
2. To develop intimacy with content generated.
3. To develop students ability to communicate visually.
Lectures
Week 1:
We learnt about the history of print. The earliest printed book came from China. Paper was also invented in China. We also learnt about the first books with illustrations.Week 2:
For books, it is very important to be aware of the format- size, binding and material. The criteria for the format of a book is based on criteria such as the audience. For example, the size used for childrens books would be very different than the size used for adult books due to the different sized hands.
Forum Questions
Q: What are the advantages of the current book format (as used today) over the scroll and palm leave formats from the perspective of the binding?
A: The current book format is much easier to mass produce, and is more sturdy and long lasting. It is also faster to produce and easier to customise to the specific needs.
Week 3:
Typography is one of the most important skills and components in graphic design. We learnt about the different characters in type faces. We also reviewed the basis of readability and legibility. Some examples of good serif typefaces are Bembo, Bodoni, Garamond etc and some sans serif ones are Helveica and Gill Sans.

Feedback
Week 4:
Visuals are too predictable and need to have more detail and variety.
Week 5:
Layout needs to be more consistent. Point size for the text is too large. Change the font of the titles, and it shouldnt be the same font as the pull quote.
Week 6:
Visuals need to be put into the layout to see the whole thing clearly.
Week 7:
Visuals are too weak and need to be changed. Try photography instead.
Reflection
Experience:
Writing the 3000 words was an enjoyable expereience as we could express ourselves freely and write about whatever we wanted. The visuals were a little more challenging though, which led me to have to change them eventually.
Observations
In the end, although I changed my visuals completely, I'm still not really satisfied with them. I feel like my classmates came up with a lot of better visuals than me.
Findings:
I found that visuals are really important because they will affect the oveall look and feel of your final book. Also, it can be challenging to layout text around your visuals so you really need to think carefully.
